Among Monsters

Abdul-Rahman Abdullah

1 - 29 Apr 2017

Among Monsters, a solo exhibition of sculptural works by Abdul-Rahman Abdullah explores childhood experiences of fear through the cultural prism of a Muslim home in urban Australia. This new body of work examines a boyhood spent in the proximity of the supernatural, rationalising understandings of the natural world that recognise a darker spiritual realm. Embracing fear becomes a coping mechanism – to imagine oneself as the monster is a way of renegotiating our relationship with fear. Abdullah invites you to meet those monsters, to share the paralysis of otherworldy encounters that blur the distinctions between memory and mythology, a place where sentience negates logic in the cover of darkness.
