Owen Leong shortlisted for Singapore Art Prize
The third edition of the Asia Pacific Breweries Association Foundation Signature Art Prize was awarded at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) on Wednesday night, with Sydney artist Owen Leong placing among the 15 finalists.
Celebrated Singapore artist Ho Tzy Nyen was awarded SG$60,000 ($55,500) grand prize for his four-channel video and installation work PYTHAGORAS (2013), an at once visceral and theatrical work that splices fragments of classic films such as The Wizard of Oz and Jean-Luc Godard's Alpha 60 with inferences to the Greek philosopher from which it takes its title.
The 15 finalists – whose work featured in a sprawling exhibition across SAM's various galleries, were whittled down from a field of 105 nominees – included artists from New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and the Philippines, working across genres as diverse as video, photography, robotics, sculpture and installation. The slipperiness of history, culture, self and state was a common thread among the finalists, with several works questioning the limits of authority and perils of control.
