Simon Degroot’s painted works are immersive in their own right, but his public art and large-scale mural commissions take them to new heights.

In addition to his studio practice, Simon Degroot creates large-scale wall paintings and exterior murals. He has completed significant public work for a range of high-profile clients including The City of South Perth, Bundaberg Regional Galleries, Queensland Rail, Cairns Regional Council, Brisbane City Council and The Brisbane Hilton, among others.

Expanding Abstraction Across Contexts

Simon Degroot’s artistic practice extends beyond the gallery, expanding from canvas into site-specific public art. He uses abstraction to develop dynamic visual experiences that operate at the intersection of art, design, and architecture—reshaping how we perceive space.

Bridging Art and Community

Often working in close collaboration with communities, Degroot incorporates site-specific elements into his work. Gestural brush marks are merged with abstracted architectural forms and local colour palettes, creating murals that reflect both place and people.

From Canvas to Concrete Walls

While his painted canvases are immersive, Degroot’s large-scale wall paintings and public murals literally elevate the work—embedding abstract gestures into the built environment and activating public space through colour, movement and scale.

Major Commissions and Public Presence

Degroot has completed major public artworks for The City of South Perth, Bundaberg Regional Galleries, Queensland Rail, Cairns Regional Council, Brisbane City Council, The Brisbane Hilton and more—cementing his role as a leading contemporary artist working in both private and public realms.
