‘Gateway’ derives from a recent pilgrimage to the Hermitage of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Catholic mystic poet. Just as Francis espoused the channeling of the divine through nature, this painting explores that feeling of a whole other world hiding between the crevices. Passing between twin trees becomes a gateway to somewhere ethereal.
The forest is idealised to represent all parts of the world at once, connecting our local environment globally. Inspired by how light heightens colours in the Blue Mountains, pigments are juxtaposed to create a shimmering effect. ‘Gateway’ aims to open a meditative space to channel the metaphysical.
