The Mosman Art Prize is Australia’s premier open painting prize. The prize is open to entrants from all across Australia over the age of 16. Mosman council funds the prize and acquires each year’s winning artwork, forming the basis of the Mosman Art Collection. Now in its 78th year the Mosman Art Prize has provided a historical timeline of contemporary painting practice in Australia.
Established in 1947, the Mosman Art Prize is Australia’s oldest local government art award. It was founded by the artist, architect and arts advocate, Alderman Allan Gamble, at a time when only a small handful of art prizes were in existence in Australia and the community had very little support and few opportunities to exhibit their work.
