Opening reception: Tuesday 21 may 6.00pm
Artist talk: Saturday 25 may 11.00am
Ten Cubed is delighted to announce artist Michael Cook to be the newest addition to the Ten Cubed 2 Collection. This extension to the original core collection seeks to include in its collection, contemporary artists from around the globe. It aims to create further connections between Australian and international artists, audiences and collectors. Michael Cook is the fifth artist to be announced as part of the Ten Cubed 2 Collection.
Ten Cubed first collected Cook’s work in 2014 with the acquisition of Majority Rule (Tunnel) and has continued to acquire his works from the Mother and Invasion series. Now part of the collection, Michael Cook will have his first exhibition with Ten Cubed in May.
Cook is a Brisbane-based photomedia artist with Bidjara heritage. His photographs subtly reveal the inconvenient truth and re-stage colonial scenes. In Majority Rule, he invites the viewer to imagine an Australia with indigenous people being the majority by reversing social roles in the accustomed cultural hierarchy. His works has a sense of quirkiness where colonial histories are recapitulated with stylized visuals. This unique aesthetic recalls a shared social history of our past experiences, establishing a universal connection that transcend cultures and perspectives.
